Ala : A Kerala Studies Blog – Update 7

From S. Harikrishnan (Co-editor, Ala)

Ala’s 10th Issue is now out, and features three articles:

– Relfi Paul, in ‘ജി.എസ്.ടി സെസ്സും നവ-കേരള നിര്‍മ്മാണവും‘, assesses the practicality of the disaster cess that was recently introduced by the Kerala government.

– In ‘Can Syrian Christians be Black‘, Sonja Thomas delves into the rarely acknowledged racial dynamics in India, and how the complex interrelationship between caste and race have impacts not just within India, but internationally.

– How can revisiting the various age-old legends about Ayyappan nuance the debate on women’s entry to Sabarimala in contemporary Kerala? Find out in Madhavi Menon’s article: ‘Ayyappan and A History of Desire in India‘.

We have also started a crowdsourced project on Facebook that records snippets on Kerala history. Read about the history of Vazhiambalams, Knots of the Kanikkar community, and Malayalam numerals.
